Is this a fungus or actually a disease?

A friend has been diagnosed with this condition and was given only one option,

Laser surgery.

This does not sound like this is in the best interest of the patient.

If anyone has had any first person experience with this, I would like to know more about this ailment, Histoplasmosis.

Dear Wayne,

"Histoplasmosis: An infection caused by inhaling spores of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, most common in the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys. Symptoms include fever, cough, malaise, and enlarged lymph nodes. In most cases the disease subsides spontaneously; less often, it progresses to severe infiltration of the lungs and death." - Dictionary of Medical Terms, Dr. Mikel Rotheburg, MD, 1994

"Histoplasmosis: an infection caused by inhaling spores of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. The primary pulmonary form usually produces no symptoms or harmful effects and is recognized retrospectively by X-rays and positive histoplasmin skin testing. Occasionally, progressive histoplasmosis, which resembles tuberculosis, develops. Scar tissue can form on the lungs. Symptomatic disease is treated with intravenous amphotericin-B or fluconazole or itraconazole. The spores are found in soil contaminated by feces, especially from chickens and bats. The disease is endemic in the northern and central US, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, and parts of Africa." - Bantam medical Dictionary, 1982.

"Supportive care usually includes oxygen for respiratory distress, glucocorticoids for adrenal insufficiency, and parenteral fluids for dysphagia due to oral or laryngeal ulcerations. Amphotericin B may cause chills, fever, nausea, and vomiting." - Handbook of Infectious Diseases, 2001.

The good news is that ozone therapy has been used successfully to treat histoplasmosis.
