Contra-indacations to the Ozone Sauna

Dear Gail,

It is a heat issue, not an ozone issue.

If you heat the body, you cause vasodilation, which brings blood from the core to the surface.

If there is a clot that is hanging on the sides of an artery or vein, that clot may break free, go to the heart and cause an infarct, or to the brain and cause stroke.

Therefore, anything which causes heat to enter the body may cause this problem. That would include saunas, hot tubs, showers, baths, sunbathing, vigorous sex, etc.

This is the main danger from any heating device, and this is fairly well-known. I have never seen a warning on a bath tub but I have seen a few on saunas.

If a person has already had a stroke, or a heart attack, then the chances are increased that they might have another one, if they are not doing anything to change their susceptibility (doing ozone daily or taking cayenne pepper daily come to mind).

So, it is very important to know beforehand if a person is in this condition. If you ask directly, then you run the risk of being pilloried by the authorities for acting as a doctor. However, if you tell them that heat is contraindicated for people with previous stroke or heart attack, then they can act with self- responsibility and make an informed decision on whether or not they are prepared to take this small risk.

Another issue is pregnant women. In Finland, it is common for pregnant women to take hot saunas. In the US, it is considered dangerous to the fetus for core temperature to be raised above 102 degrees. So, to be safe, we don't allow pregnant women to take saunas.

The third area is high blood pressure. If a person has elevated blood pressure, it is often due to the lack of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, which can be consumed from flax oil, or deep sea fish sources. When the kidneys do not get sufficient amounts of Omega 3 EFAs, they overproduce renin. The renin stimulates the adrenal glands to produce angiotensin, which is one of the body's mechanisms for causing vasoconstriction, and thus blood pressure increase. It is like pinching a water hose to increase the output pressure. Once the kidneys get their Omega 3s, they reduce renin production, the adrenals reduce angiotensisn production, the blood vessels relax, and blood pressure drops.

If this is not a part of diet, or if diet is insufficient to cause the desired reduction in blood pressure, the ozone sauna will accomplish the same effect. Due to the heat, a different approach is necessary. The person enters an unheated sauna, and the ozone is started. The heat is started up, but held to a low level (say 102 F). After 15 minutes, everything is shut off, and the person exits, showers, and leaves. The next 10 times, the same procedure is followed. After that, the time is increased to 20 minutes. Then in the next series, the temperature is increased slightly each time, allowing the body to adjust to the heat stress. This is the ramp-up technique. It is a conditioning process, like training for a marathon.

Best of health!
