Alternative Medicine Law Approved in Ohio
STRONGSVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 14, 2000
Governor Robert Taft of Ohio has signed into law House Bill 90, opening the
doors for licensed physicians to offer responsible alternative medical care
to their patients. The bill states that alternative medicine is part of the
acceptable practice of medicine as long as there is informed consent and the
risks and
potential benefits are reasonable when compared with those of conventional
medicine. House Bill 90 goes into effect on October 9, 2000.
Ohio becomes the 12th state to pass similar legislation. Ohio doctors have
been reluctant to provide alternatives for their patients, in large part
because they feared that they might be sanctioned by the Medical Board for
going outside what is considered a "usual and customary" conventional
treatment for
various medical problems.
The Ohio bill is unique because the chief sponsors of the bill, Senator
Charles Horn from Dayton and Representative George Terwillager from
Hamilton, urged the Medical Board to meet with leading proponents of
alternative medicine in Ohio to work out language that was acceptable to
both points of view. The result was a bill that passed 91-3 in the House and
33-0 in the Senate.
