what setting are used,is this enough pressure? how far is the catheter inserted? roger

Dear Roger,

There are two techniques for male urethral insufflation:

1) Insert the catheter about one inch into the urethral opening. No urine will come out.

2) Insert a longer catheter about six inches into the urethral opening. This will penetrate the bladder ring muscle, so be prepared to void the urine into the toilet.

For both techniques, the flow rate is 1/32 l/m, and the duration is one to five minutes.

In the first technique, you are counting on the pressure to open the bladder ring muscle. It helps to relax the muscle as much as possible. It is the same feeling as trying to urinate while having an erection.

If the gas does not penetrate, then it will be necessary to insert the catheter as in the second technique.

This is not an easy protocol, to say the least...
